Creating your URL is the FIRST step to establishing a web page and your web presence. To maximize the medical SEO value for your “www,” we recommend choosing a combination of words that are descriptive of your medical specialty and business.
Refrain from using the name of your practice and adding “.com.” It’ll work, but it isn’t necessary anymore to retain the same URL as your business name, people no longer expect it. The point I’m making is that most of us don’t have a business name that describes the business well. From an SEO perspective, you can do better.
Pick Three Adjectives That Describe Your Business
Try a simple exercise. Write down 3 words, or keywords, that will define who you are and what you do. I chose “Retina Eye Doctor.”
A keyword tool (it’s a web page) can rank commonly used terms, or keywords, that the layman will use to search a topic. Pick a few words that are commonly used. For instance, “eye doctor” is a better choice than ophthalmologist or optometrist because more people usually use these for search terms.
An example, John Q. Public, M.D. just finished ophthalmology residency and wants to set up a web page in his new town of Bedrock. From an SEO standpoint, BedrockEyeDoctor.com works a lot better than JohnQPublicMD.com. Make sense?
Using Keywords to Create Your Domain
This method has several advantages; 1) it is an SEO technique, 2) there are no copyright infringements and 3) it is cheap. As you’ll learn, using more popular keywords, such as “Coke,” in your URL will cost you more than the basic $8-$12 to buy a URL.
Choose a KeyWord Tool based upon actual searches… use the Google Adwords Tool.
Permute Your Keywords
Use your 3 words in any order that may make sense. You are stringing together a few words that are most often used to search your business. They can be in order. The search engines are pretty smart. They’ll make as many words as possible out the order that you choose.
For instance, “RetinaEyeDoctor” will be broken up the same way as “DoctorEyeRetina” or “TheRetinaEyeDoctor.”
Purchase the URL
Buying the URL is easy. At GoDaddy.com , or BlueHost.com, simply type in your chosen URL. If it’s available for purchase, go ahead.
Next item…choose hosting.
