Avoid Writer’s Block | Tips to Prevent Writer’s Block

March 3, 2017 by Randall Wong, M.D.

Writer's Block | Tips to Break Writer's Block
Close up of confused female doctor against a white background

Everyone gets writer’s block.  Do you?

Writer’s block is the inability to think of what to write or how to proceed with writing.

Great writing is imperative to your SEO and web rankings.  It is important that you discover what conditions allow you to write creatively, flowingly and coherently.

Writer’s block is unpredictable and unexplainable.  It happens to both new and experienced writers

Here are some of my “best practices” and keys to avoiding writer’s block.  I’ve written thousands of articles over the years and have a few suggestions how to avoid this paralysis to your creativity.  I hope these tips will help make you aware of what allows you to write well, freely and unencumbered.

This post runs in parallel to my marketing podcast with Russell Faust on “Russ and Randy.”

Consistent Writing Thru a Routine

Many great writer’s recommend a change of venue, scenery or surroundings when faced with writer’s block.

I found quite the opposite works for me.  For the most part, I like routine, of course, your results may vary.  This routine does not always work, but it seems to have decreased the frequency of writer’s block.

Here’s what makes me write reliably, easily and decreases “writer’s block”;

  • best hours of writing between 6 AM and noon
  • write only on my desktop
  • write only in my office
  • no distractions

I learned after a year or so, that you can not fix writer’s block easily.  It’s kind of like a mood, you just can’t change moods with a snap of your fingers.  Once I figured out what makes me write easiest, I have become less frustrated when I can not write easily or not at all.

Perhaps I have become a better and creative writer, or my “routine” really works.  I’ll never know.

Frustration – Getting Nothing Done

I’ve also realized that if I am not writing well, I should engage in a completely different activity – one unrelated to writing.  This avoids the frustration when not being productive with your writing.

We all have overloaded crazy busy lives.  It’s too easy to become frustrated when you are not productive.  By switching activities, I am likely to still feel productive.

My routine has allowed me to effectively write more often.  The result is that I am able to write better and more often – the perfect recipe to achieving great SEO and web rankings.

Are You Writing Enough to Dominate Website Rankings?

February 9, 2017 by Randall Wong, M.D.

How Often to Write to Achieve Website Rankings | Healthcare and Medical Internet MarketingHow often should you post to your website to insure great website rankings?

You need to outrank your online competitors…not every other practice.  Your articles need to be more relevant (practicing good SEO) than other practices in your area who have an active website.

You will be surprised to learn that you may not need to write as much or often as you think.

This post corresponds to our latest podcast episode of “Russ and Randy” – a podcast on Healthcare and Medical Internet Marketing.  We hope you like “Winning the Rankings Race.”  You can find us on iTunes.

There are 3 Rs or general rules to achieving great rankings, or great SEO.  Your articles must be;

  1. Relevant to the Google Search (it must answer the question asked or provide a solution)
  2. Refreshed – articles must be published on a site that is refreshed (new content)
  3. Regularly – website must be refreshed regularly with relevant content

Assuming you are writing great content, for your website to rank well, you must write often, but how often?

With Whom are You Competing

To dominate the rankings, you need to write more than your competitors.  The more competitors you have, the more you’ll have to write.

But who are your competitors?

You will be glad to know that your competitors are NOT your colleagues with whom you share the same specialty.  The definition of competition has changed.  Your actual competitors are;

  1. Those who practice the same specialty as you
  2. Those who practice in the same area (zip code) as you
  3. Those who have an active website, like you

Very few of your competitors will be maintaining an active website.  All you need to do is outwrite them!

Own Your Zip Code

You want to publish better content and more often than your digital competitors with whom you share a geographic location…or your zip code.

Your goal is to write better and more often than those in your surrounding community…to own your zip code!

All the best!

Only 3 Types of Websites Rank | Which is Yours?

January 12, 2017 by Randall Wong, M.D.

Ranking Websites Differ by Content | Healthcare and Medical Internet MarketingThere are only 3 types of websites and they differ by their content, ability to rank and market your practice, and the ability to engage or interact with readers.  Which is yours?

Your website is one of these 3;

  1. Static content (Good) – no marketing value because it won’t rank with Google
  2. Dynamic content (Better) – regularly adding content is rewarded by rankings
  3. Interactive (Best) – a dynamic site which also engages readers

Websites with Static Content

These are simply resource sites.  Content is old and there has not been any new content in months or years.  This type of website has no ability to rank as the content is static – not changing.  Search engines will not rank stale sites with static content.

The only visitors which arrive on this site are your existing patients.  They might be looking for insurance participation or your fax number… that’s about it.

Because this site will not rank, patients unknown to you will never land on your website because it doesn’t rank.

This is at least better than not having a website at all.

Dynamic Websites Rank

Remember the 3 Rs of SEO?

Websites with relevant content published on a website which regularly refreshes the content rank the best.  These sites have marketing value because they get high Google rankings.

Because they are able to rank, potential new patients are able to find these sites.

Regularly publishing articles is the best way to achieve website rankings and market your practice.

Interactive Websites are the Best

The best sites for converting readers to patients are interactive sites.  These sites have dynamic content and invite comments to be left by the readers.  Answering these comments starts a dialogue, or conversation, and serves as a very simple form of social media.

These conversations are visible on your site and are hugely attractive to future readers…improving and optimizing your site to engage readers.  Engaged readers become patients.

Want to Grow Your Practice? You Need a Lead Magnet

December 15, 2016 by Randall Wong, M.D.

Use a Lead Magnet to Grow Your Practice | Healthcare and Medical MarketingA lead magnet is also known as a value offer.  These are marketing terms used to describe what you, the website owner, will give away in exchange for an email address.

The goal of using a lead magnet is to grow your email list.  Your list is the key to using  your website to grow your practice.  As you are learning, patients do NOT call your practice just because they found your website…using a lead magnet is the beginning of the process to convert a visitor to become a patient.

The Value Offer

Your lead “magnet,” or value offer can be your health-related newsletter, eBook, or presentation.  The value in your lead magnet is patient education.

You are offering education materials in exchange for an email address.  It’s a promise of an exchange of something valuable for contact information.

The usual lead magnet for most websites is a newsletter.  More ambitious practices might consider an eBook.  A cookbook or recipes for diabetic patients would be a great example.

Lead Magnet Starts Patient Conversion

Converting a website reader into a patient requires a process.  That process includes the following 5 steps;

  1. Find your website (your website has to rank)
  2. Consider your value offer (newsletter in exchange for email address)
  3. Appreciate value through your “magnet” (newsletter)
  4. Develop trust
  5. Make an appointment

Everyone equates website rankings with SEO (search engine optimization).  Once your next patient notices your website, you start the process of engagement, or conversion, by obtaining their contact information.

The value offer or lead magnet is your request for their email address.

Want More Traffic? Use Images in Your Posts

December 8, 2016 by Randall Wong, M.D.

Images enhance Blog Post Views | Healthcare and Medical Internet Marketing | MMEEvery website needs images, but so does each of your website articles published on your site.  Pictures, infographics, stock photos etc. enhance your articles.  They make them more attractive and increase the likelihood they will be clicked…and viewed.

There are many ways to make your articles more inviting to read.  Use of images is one of the best methods to dramatically improve your views by 80% or more.

Enhance Your Article with Images

Of course you want to use pics and photos in your marketing material and on your website.  These are just some ways you will want to use images.

  • Your article becomes more visually appealing and easier to read.  It becomes less boring.
  • Appeals to visual learners
  • May convey additional information about your article
  • Improves reader’s retention
  • Allows you to add a personal touch
  • Increases views if image is appears in local search

Don’t feel compelled to use clinical photos all the time.  Clinical photos can be mixed with non-clinical images to express feeling or entrench a message.  For instance, if a new drug receives “FDA Approval,” you might choose (as I have!) to insert a pic of a “thumbs up” or a rubber stamp that says “approved.”

What to Do and What Not to Do

I learned a hard lesson at the start of my marketing career.  I was caught, and successfully fined >$750, for the use of a retinal photograph downloaded from the Internet.  Here are a few “best practices” for use of images in your articles;

  • Do NOT download images from the Internet
  • Do NOT use material for which you do NOT have permission
  • Improve SEO by using ALT TAGS
  • Use images which are relevant to your article
  • Informatics enhance your message
  • Obtain consent if using recognizable patient photos

Royalty Free Photos – Free or Inexpensive

I use the following sites for my clinical publishing and for my marketing and podcasting.

Free “Royalty Free” Sites

  • Pixabay.com
  • Flickr.com
  • Morguefile.com
  • Canva.com (Canva is actually one of the BEST and FREE design and layout tools for graphics)

Inexpensive Stock Sites

  • Fotolia.com
  • 123rf.com
  • iStockphoto.com (pricier)
  • Depositphotos.com
  • Presentermedia.com

All the best!

Website Not Ranking?

Did you just pay thousands for a redesign and realize that new graphics don't rank web pages?

Want to ReDesign Your Site? Think Again!

A fresh new look might seem like a practice builder, but how are you going to improve your website performance?

Social Media Confusing?

Do you really need social media? It may not be the right time to consider social media, or, it may not be right for your practice...but it can be a powerful tool.
